Men's Basketball Fends Off Falcons in Double Overtime Thriller

MEQUON, Wis. – In a early conference play heavy weight with the top two teams in the preseason poll, the MSOE men's basketball team fended on Concordia University Wisconsin in a double overtime thriller.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 113

Concordia Wisconsin - 109

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took over ten minutes played from the opening tip either side grabbing a two-possession lead when Concordia Wisconsin (3-4, 1-1 NACC) took a 22-17 lead with 9:51 to go. Ethan Johnson sent on a 7-0 run himself to put MSOE (4-3, 2-0 NACC) ahead 32-26 with 6:34 to play. The Raiders held their lead at the same margin throughout the remainder of the first half until Chase Cummings buried two three-pointers with under a minute to play in the half to push it to double-digits, as the Raiders went into the break leading 47-34.
  • The Raiders continued to hold their steady lead throughout the beginning of the second half. The Raiders were able to attack the paint as they hit three layups and a jump shot to push the lead to 67-47 with 13:46 to play. The Falcons for the remainder of the half continued to trickle down their deficit, making it single digits with under nine minutes to play and then tied the game on their final possession with one second remaining, forcing overtime.
  • Carson Cordelli knocked in a pair of free throws to open the extra five minutes that the Falcons then answered with on their next possession. The two traded free throws once again as Mason Dopirak knocked in a pair before Cordelli converted on an and-one play to lead 94-91. The Falcons took the lead on six straight free throws to lead 97-94, but with 31 seconds remaining, Matus Dopirak nailed three straight free throws to tie the game at 97 and force a second overtime. The Raiders took the lead from the jump as Matus nailed a three pointer before Cummings hit a three to lead by six with 2:38 to play. After the Falcons cut it back down to two, Matus put the final nail in the coffin as he hit a three with 26 seconds to play.
