MSOE Downs Marian For Third-Straight Win

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Senior Shannon Larson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the MSOE women's basketball team to a 65-59 victory over Marian Wednesday evening at Sadoff Gymnasium.

The Raiders (3-2, 2-0 NACC) pushed their winning streak to three-straight games, while handing the Sabres (1-5, 1-1 NACC) their first conference loss of the season.

Larson was an efficient 7-of-9 from the field and spear-headed her team's free throw efforts by knocking down 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. MSOE made 80 percent of its 25 free throw attempts in the game, including 7-of-10 over the final three minutes to hold off the home team.

The Red and White had three more double-digit scorers, as junior Marly Trier, sophomore Megan Kroll and freshman Margaret Pugh scored 10 points apiece.

The game was back and forth the entire night. In the first half, the Raiders turned around an early 9-4 Sabre lead with a 14-1 run to build their largest lead of the night at 18-10. Larson led the charge with six points during the spurt, while Kroll tallied four.

Marian responded with an 11-2 run to jump ahead 21-20 at 3:24 in the first half. The teams would stay tight throughout the remainder of the opening half, heading into halftime tied at 24-24.

The second half started the same way the first had ended, with the teams trading baskets, each time one team pulled ahead, the other answered. The Sabres held a slim 41-40 at 10:11 before the Raiders a 10-4 run to take the lead for good at 50-45 with 6:27 to play.

Each time MSOE pulled away, Marian kept close. The score was within one at one point, while the game was not separated by more than five points until freshman Corrine Sanford got steal and hit a quick layup with eight seconds remaining.

In addition to a strong night shooting at the free throw line, the Raiders also shot 43.1 percent from the field. They also pulled down 12 offensive rebounds on the way to a decisive 36-22 rebounding advantage. Freshman Holly Denfeld finished with a game-high nine rebounds to go with six points and four assists before fouling out.

The Raiders return to action Saturday, playing at Alverno on the south side of Milwaukee. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
