Box Score APPLETON, Wis. – Junior Laurie Gieni scored two goals, including a power play game-winner in the opening period, to lead the MSOE hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Lawrence Saturday evening.
The Raiders (4-12-1, 3-7 NCHA) picked up the weekend series sweep of the Vikings (4-12-1, 3-7 NCHA) after a 1-0 victory in Milwaukee Friday.
Whereas Friday's game saw Milwaukee take a 51-22 shot advantage, but scored just one goal. Saturday's game was much more evenly played, but the Raider offense did well to convert its chances. Senior Michael Thompson got the scoring started just 3:44 into the game, finishing off an assist from senior West Bauman.
Bauman then set up Gieni's first goal of the game at 8:21, as the Ontario-native picked up his second goal on a power play.
The goal gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead until William Thoren got the home team on the board at 14:20 on a short-handed goal assisted by Matt Moore.
Genei added his second goal in the second period, finishing off assists from freshmen Tyler Johnson and Gage Christianson. Thompson then set up Bauman for a goal of his own, making it 4-1 with just 2:13 remaining in the game.
MSOE conceded a 28-27 shot advantage in the game, but got a strong performance in goal from sophomore Nick Kohn. He made 27 saves on the night for his second win of the season. Meanwhile, Mattias Soderqvist stopped 23 shots for Lawrence.
The Raiders will look to keep their three-game unbeaten streak going next weekend when they enter into a weekend series with No. 4 St. Norbert. The teams will play in DePere Friday and at the Kern Center in Milwaukee Saturday.
