Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomores Holly Denfeld and Shaylan Reardon combined to score 43 points on 19-of-26 shooting to lead the MSOE women's basketball to a convincing 78-43 victory over Lake Forest in its season-opener Tuesday at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (1-0) shot 54.5 percent on offense and limited the Foresters (1-3) to just 29.1 percent shooting with 23 turnovers in a solid defensive outing.
Denfeld finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Reardon notched 21 points and four assists in her MSOE debut, while senior Bre Strong also posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Marly Trier rounded out the team's double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Lake Forest was led in scoring by Brie Majkowski's seven points.
MSOE led for almost the entire opening frame, taking the lead for good midway through the first half. LFC took a brief 14-13 lead, but the Raiders responded with 12-straight points to make it a 25-14 game. Strong and Reardon hit back-to-back three's during the run and Reardon capping it with a layup.
The Foresters was back within nine at 27-18 with 4:34 to play in the period, but the Red & White scored the final six points of the half to go into halftime with a 34-18 lead.
The visitors scored the first five points of the second half to make it a 34-23 game, but MSOE answered with a 19-2 run to effectively put the game away at 57-27. The Raiders would build their lead as high as 41 on a layup from freshman Fran O'Malley to make it 72-31 with 3:31 remaining.
The Red & White was efficient on offense, connecting on 4-of-8 from three-point range and converting 73.7 percent of its free throw attempts. The team also had a 14-13 assist-to-turnover ratio in the game.
Trier and senior Ali LoBue had a team-high four steals each, while Strong also had three.
The Raiders return to action Saturday, opening NACC play at Rockford.
