Raiders Close Out Sweep of Aurora, 5-2

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Patrick Dwyer scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the MSOE hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Aurora Sunday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (4-4) won their fourth-straight game and completed the weekend sweep of the Spartans (0-6) with relative ease, compared to the 6-5 barn-burner on Saturday night.

The game started off similarly to Saturday, with Aurora jumping ahead early. Jimmie Perkins scored the first of his two goals just 66 seconds after the opening face-off to give the visitor's a 1-0 lead.

That was where the similarities ended, MSOE was able to equalize almost seven minutes later. Freshman James Ring lit the lamp with an assist from freshman Jerad Tafoya to knot the game at 1-1.

The Red & White put the game away as Dwyer beat the goalie for back-to-back scores in the second period. His first goal came at 10:25 and was off assists from juniors Patrick LeBeau and Casey Moneer. Dwyer struck again for the eventual game-winner at 15:42 to make it 3-2, this time finishing off assists from Ring and junior Nick LaRue.

Freshman Conner Enciso and junior Evan Wilson put the game out of reach, each scoring in the third period to make it 5-1. Enciso picked up his first collegiate goal at 3:27 and Wilson struck at 17:37.

Perkins added a consolation goal for Aurora at 18:08 of the final period.

MSOE's defense showed a marked improvement, after surrendering five goals through two periods Saturday. Aside from an early miscue that led to the Spartans' first goal, the defensive effort was on point in front of sophomore Austin Campbell in goal. The Raiders had a dominating 40-15 shot advantage in the game and Campbell stopped 13 shots.

The Red & White will look to keep on its winning ways, hosting Northland in a weekend series at the Kern Center next weekend. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The teams will then close things out Saturday at 2 p.m.
