Box Score HANCOCK, Mich. – Sophomore Evan Wilson scored a hat trick to lead the MSOE hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Finlandia Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.
Wilson scored two of the Raiders' (6-14-1, 5-9 NCHA) three power play goals on the day. The win completed their sweep of the Lions (2-17-1, 1-13 NCHA) after a 3-1 win Friday night.
MSOE jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in each of the first two periods, before piling on three in the game's final frame.
Wilson and junior Logan Bauman set up the game's first goal, a power play tally by freshman Brandon Unser just 3:05 into the game. Then, Wilson netted his first, also on a power play, at 15:38 of the second period with assists from senior Michael Thompson and freshman Gage Christianson.
Dino Burggrabe pulled a goal back for Finlandia, halving the Raiders' lead, with just under 90 seconds remaining in the second period.
The Raiders wasted little time tacking on to their lead, as Wilson broke through again, this time at even strength, just two minutes into the final period. It was the first of two even-strength goals in the period for Wilson, who capped the scoring at 17:50. Sophomore Sean Van Eysden assisted on both goals, while sophomore Nick LaRue also assisted on his final goal of the day.
Sophomore Casey Moneer also got on the score sheet, beating the goalie at 8:18 off an assist from Bauman, his second of the game.
Freshman Austin Campbell made his second-straight start and scored his second-straight win by allowing just one goal. He made 20 saves to even his record at 4-4-1 on the season.
Troy Chandler stopped 18 shots for the Lions.
MSOE returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against Lake Forest. The series starts Friday at LFC before moving to the Kern Center for a Saturday afternoon contest.
