Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against Purdue-Calumet and Carroll in its home triangular Saturday at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (4-4) snapped a three-match losing streak by taking down the Peregrines (2-3) in the first match 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22. In the second, the Pioneers (4-8) posted their second win of the day with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 victory.
The Raiders jumped out early in the first set against PUC, limiting the Peregrines to .000 hitting and rolling 25-14. In the second set, MSOE once again jumped out ahead, but this time had to fend off a late 6-1 Purdue run when it had lead 23-17. Junior Kasey Mylin ended the run and clinched the set with a kill.
After Purdue-Calumet took the third set, the Raiders used a 6-2 run midway through the fourth frame to take the lead for good. The Peregrines staved off two match points, but on MSOE's third try, junior Leah Hendricks got a kill to give her team the match.
Sophomore Sarabeth Haworth led the team with 15 kills and 17 digs. Three more Red & White players reached double-figures in kills, including freshman Abby Born who had 25 assists, 11 digs and three service aces.
In the second match, the Pioneers captured the first set by scoring the final two points after a 23-23 tie. Then, they took a 2-0 lead by committing just three errors in the second set. MSOE bounced back and took the third frame, another tight set. But, Carroll hit .312 in the fourth set to take the match.
The Raider defense seemed up to the task, as five different players reached double-figures in digs. Junior Ali Borrelli tallied 22 and freshman Aleah Quast had 20. Haworth finished with 17 once again paced the offense, this time with 11 kills.
The Raiders open NACC play Tuesday, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran at the Kern Center.
