Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Abby Born tallied eight kills to go with 24 assists in leading the MSOE women's volleyball team to a 25-13, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Rockford Tuesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (10-12, 1-6 NACC) swept past the Regents (7-14, 1-5 NACC) for the second time this season, ending an 11-match losing streak in the process.
Born guided the offense as per usual, but picked her spots to collect a team-high eight kills on 10 attempts with one error for a .700 attack percentage. Freshman Hannah Pekarek and junior Madeline Molnor added eight kills each, with Pekarek attacking at a .500 clip for the match. Junior Sarabeth Haworth tallied five service aces in the match.
Liberty Hartman tallied a match-best 11 kills to lead Rockford.
MSOE came out of the gates rolling, hitting .382 with no attack errors in winning the first set. It used a 12-2 run to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 14-6 lead. The Red & White then used a late 6-1 run to open a 24-12 advantage.
It looked as though the second set would be just as decisive for the Raiders, as they opened an 18-8 lead after a 4-0 run. Rockford answered back with a 7-2 run to make it interesting at 20-15, then scored four-straight points later to make it 23-20. Fortunately for MSOE, it did what it had to down the stretch to close out the frame.
The final set was just as close as each time the Red & White pulled ahead, the visitors closed. An 8-2 run made it 16-9 to the Raiders, but RU had a run of five-straight points to pull within two at 18-16. The teams traded runs of 3-0 down the stretch, but MSOE closed on a 4-0 run to complete the sweep.
The Red & White finished the night strong, hitting .367 in the final set, to finish with just eight errors and a .315 attack percentage on the night. Rockford was limited to .123 hitting for the match.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday, hosting Alverno at 7 p.m.
