Raiders' Win Streak Halted at WLC

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The MSOE women's basketball team saw its school-record 11-game winning streak stopped with a 73-55 loss at Wisconsin Lutheran Tuesday evening.

The Raiders (11-5, 9-2 NACC) trailed by one heading into the final quarter, but the Warriors 11-5, 9-2 NACC) outscored them 26-9 in the period to stifle any comeback attempts.

Junior Holly Denfeld posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game, shooting 8-of-10 from the field. Senior Megan Kroll finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jen Dowden scored a game-high 27 for WLC, which also got 13 points from Tyler Bahr and 12 FROM Caitlin Knueppel.

MSOE led early in the game and carried a 31-27 lead into halftime. The lead changed hands multiple times before Wisconsin Lutheran went on a 12-2 run to take the lead for good at 55-48 with 6:38 to go in the third quarter.

In the decisive final period, the Warriors shot 7-of-12 from the field and made all 12 free throws. Meanwhile, the Raiders shot just 2-for-11 from the field as they attempted to come back. The free throw line proved to be the difference as the home team was able to pull away down the stretch.

Free throws were a big factor in the outcome, as Wisconsin Lutheran got to the free throw line 33 times in the game and made 28. MSOE attempted just 10 in the game and made eight. The Red & White shot 37.1 percent from the field in the game and WLC shot 41.5 percent.

The Raiders closed out the first quarter on an 10-0 run to lead 18-10 after the opening period. They would lead by as many as 10 on a layup by junior Lizzy Hilby early in the second quarter, but Wisconsin Lutheran was able to cut into the deficit and halve the deficit by halftime.

Despite the loss, MSOE remains in first place in the NACC standings, tied with WLC and Concordia Wisconsin at 9-2.

The Red & White will look to pick up a new winning streak when it returns to the floor Saturday, hosting Benedictine.
