Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Holly Denfeld finished with 28 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots to propel the MSOE women's basketball team to 62-60 come-from-behind victory over Concordia Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (7-4, 5-1 NACC) tied a school record with their seventh-straight win, but it was far from easy as they needed Denfeld's go-ahead basket to undo the Cougars (4-6, 2-4 NACC).
Denfeld finished 8-of-17 from the field and made 12-of-15 free throws on the day. Senior Megan Kroll scored 10 points before fouling out as the only other Red & White player in double-digits.
Morgan Jahnke scored 19 points off the bench for Concordia Chicago, while Lauren Orr also came off the bench and scored 14 points.
MSOE trailed by eight points early in the final quarter, but had battled back within one at 58-57 with 17 seconds remaining and the ball. Head coach Jessica Ott called timeout and coming out of the break, Denfeld drove and hit a layup with 10.7 seconds remaining to put her team ahead for good.
A CUC turnover on the next possession and a quick foul put freshman Brooke Scott at the free throw line with 10.1 seconds on the clock. She calmly sank both free throws for a three-point advantage. The Cougars would answer with a basket at the three-second mark, but Denfeld was fouled and iced the game with two seconds remaining.
Concordia got a potential game-tying layup up at the buzzer, but it was off the mark.
Denfeld finished with 15 points in the fourth quarter, while all five of Scott's points in the game came in the final two minutes. The Raiders trailed 58-52 with 1:45 to go in the game. Scott then converted a three-point play and Kroll hit a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game. Scott also grabbed the key defensive rebound to set up Denfeld's go-ahead basket.
The game was played at a frenetic pace at times and neither team shot particularly well. MSOE finished at 32.2 percent for the game and Concordia Chicago 30.4 percent. The Raiders did get to the free throw line, converting 23 for a 71.9 percent clip. The visitors were just 14-of-23 (.609).
MSOE's current winning streak matched the two seven-game runs by the Raiders during last season's 20-win campaign.
With the 28 points, Denfeld pushed her career total to 999 points and will look for career point 1,000 when the team returns to action Tuesday at Concordia Wisconsin.
