Ring Caps Hockey's 4-3 Win Over Finlandia

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Junior James Ring netted a power play game-winner midway through the third period to send the MSOE hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Finlandia Friday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (6-6-4, 3-5-3 NCHA) conceded the first goal, but took leads on the Lions (0-19, 0-13 NCHA) at 2-1 and 3-2 before closing out the game.

Senior Jordan Guth and sophomore Matthew Romund tallied a goal and assist each, while sophomore Eric Tien also lit the lamp for MSOE. Junior Brett Wagner tallied a pair of assists on the night, as well.

Ring's winner answered a Finlandia equalizer at the 9:23 mark of the third period. Ring struck just 17 seconds into a power play on a manufactured goal through the power play unit. Romund and senior Gage Christianson worked the puck to Ring.

The Lions scored the lone goal of the opening period, putting the Red & White in a familiar situation down 1-0. All six of the team's wins this season have come when conceding the first goal.

Romund and Tien scored back-to-back goals in the second period for a 2-1 Raider lead. Romund scored from the left wing after his brother, sophomore Michael Romund, forced a loose puck with a hit at the boards. Tien's goal followed with some nifty passing through the neutral zone by Guth and Wagner, with Wagner's pass into the attacking zone leading to the goal.

Finlandia would tie the game at 2-2 at the 17:09 mark of the second period, but Guth netted a rebound score just 95 seconds into the third period for another lead, this time at 3-2.

The Raiders held a convincing 36-16 shot advantage in the game. They converted 1-of-4 power play attempts and killed off 4-of-5 chances for FU with the man advantage. Senior Austin Campbell got the start in goal for MSOE and made 13 saves. Alec Rounds stopped 32 shots on the night.

The series concludes Saturday at the Kern Center. The puck is scheduled for a 2:15 p.m. drop.
