Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team had five different goal scorers as it routed Finlandia 5-1 and completed a weekend sweep Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (7-6-4, 4-5-3 NCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and quickly re-established the two-goal advantage after the Lions (0-19, 0-14 NCHA) got on the board.
Junior Brett Wagner had two points in the second-straight game with a goal and assist, while sophomore Eric Tien scored a goal for the second-straight day and added an assist as well. Freshman Nick Redmon's first collegiate goal, senior Gage Christianson's team-leading 11th goal and a strike from freshman Evan Kearns rounded out the scorers.
Redmon and Tien's goals came relatively close together late in the opening period as the Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. Redmon's slap shot came at 14:19 and opened the scoring and Tien lit the lamp at 17:51 for the eventual game-winner. Senior Jordan Guth assisted on both goals.
Finlandia pulled a goal back at 13:36 of the second period, but Christianson very quickly cancelled that score out. He struck just 23 seconds later to make it 3-1 and effectively ice the game.
Kearns and Wagner added insurance goals in the third period to complete the scoring. Kearns scored at 5:32 of the period and Wagner put a bow on the victory just 2:01 from the final horn.
Senior Austin Campbell made his second-straight start in goal and stopped 15-of-16 shots faced. A pair of goalies saw action, combining on 23 saves amongst 28 Red & White shots.
The weekend sweep allowed the Raiders to gain traction in the race for a place in the Harris Cup Playoffs. The two games amounted to the two games they had in hand on third-place Concordia Wisconsin (13 points), and now trail by just two points with 11 in the South Division standings.
MSOE returns to the ice next weekend, hosting second-place Marian Friday in the opening game of a home-and-home series.
