Box Score MILWAUKEE – Junior Zach Woodman made 33 saves for his second shutout of the season as the MSOE hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Aurora with a 3-0 victory Saturday night at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (11-7-5, 8-6-4 NCHA) posted their third shutout of the season and second in three games by downing the Spartans (4-18-1, 4-13-1 NCHA) in a key weekend series as they look to stay in the Harris Cup Playoff picture.
Woodman and the Red & White defense were up to the task, killing off eight power plays in the game including a 5-on-3 stretch in the third period. Aurora put 17 shots on goal with the man advantage, accounting for over half of Woodman's saves.
Seniors Jordan Guth and Gage Christianson and junior Jerad Tafoya each scored for MSOE, with Tafoya's holding up as the game-winner and Christianson's going down as a short-handed empty-netter in the final minute.
Tafoya's score came in the final minute of the first period, as freshman Nick Redmon worked the puck across the zone to junior Zach Simpson, who launched a shot on goal. His shot was saved, but Tafoya was at the far post to tuck the rebound into the net.
After a scoreless second period, Guth doubled the Raider advantage at 8:55 of the second period with an attractive goal off assists from sophomore Eric Tien and freshman Adem Arifi. Guth took Tien's pass, skated in on goal and used his 6-foot-5 frame to reach back and put the puck around the goalie.
The Spartans pulled their goalie with 2:01 to play, while on the power play for a 6-on-4 advantage. Just inside the final minute, Tafoya collected a loose puck and cleared the zone. He sent a pass forward for Christianson, who beat the defenseman, and skated in on the un-manned goal to put the game away at 3-0.
Jared Rutledge made 34 saves for Aurora in the loss.
With other results in the league, the Raiders sit tied for the third and final playoff spot in the NCHA South with Lake Forest at 20 points.
MSOE closes out the regular season with a home-and-home series against first-place St. Norbert. The opening game is Thursday at the Kern Center in a game that will be televised live on Spectrum Sports in Wisconsin.
