Hockey Caps Three-Point Weekend with Lawrence

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team overcame an early deficit with a pair of unanswered goals, but could not hold on in settling for a 2-2 tie with Lawrence Friday night at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (9-7-5, 6-6-4 NCHA) defeated the Vikings (5-13-3, 4-9-3 NCHA) 3-0 on Thursday and took three points from the weekend series with the draw.

Senior Brandon Unser and freshman Nick Redmon scored goals for MSOE, which faced a 1-0 deficit after one period. The home team dominated the stat sheet with a 41-17 shot advantage but conceded a pair of power play goals on the night.

Senior Austin Campbell made 15 saves in the start for the Red & White. Evan Cline countered with 39 saves for Lawrence.

Sean Reynold opened the scoring at 15:39 of the first period, staking the Vikings to a 1-0 lead midway through their first power play opportunity of the night.

The lead did not last long as Unser finished just 2:31 into the second period to level the score. Sophomore Eric Tien brought the puck through the neutral zone and slotted it to Unser, whose initial attempt slid just wide of the target. He then beat the goalie with a diving swipe at the puck and was rewarded for his hard work.

At 11:25 of the period, junior James Ring led a counter attack with the Raiders playing a man down. With Redmon trailing the play, Ring slotted a centering pass back and Redmon one-timed a wrist shot past Cline for a short-handed goal and the 2-1 lead.

Lawrence would not go away, with Austin Frank tying the game just 31 seconds into a third-period power play.

Despite five third-period power plays, the Raiders were unable to capitalize and the game went to overtime. The extra period was played from end to end with the best chance coming two minutes in when senior Gage Christianson hit the post.

MSOE returns to the ice Friday at Aurora in the first game of a home-and-home weekend series.
