Men's Soccer Wins 1-0 Thriller Against Edgewood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The shut them out or get shut out method still holds up to the test. After falling to Aurora by the score of 2-1 on Saturday, the only game where the Raiders have scored a goal in a loss, MSOE got back on the winning path by taking down Edgewood 1-0 to claim wins in their last two out of three games.

RESULTS
Edgewood – 0
MSOE – 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
Though some might think that 1-0 games in soccer are boring, this one was not. MSOE (4-4-1, 2-1-0 NACC) and Edgewood (5-5-1, 2-1-0 NACC) played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but all the action was still to come in the second. There was a total of 14 shots taken in the last 45 minutes, including 11 from the Raiders alone.

Lucas D'Amato and Joey Schauer broke the longstanding tie at the 58' mark when Schauer set up D'Amato for a nice strike on the left side of the box that hit the righthand corner of the net. That would end up being the game winning goal, but the Eagles would not go down quietly. Their play became extremely aggressive in the last 30 minutes of the game, playing desperation soccer to try and get on the board. They were handed three yellow cards in an 11-minute span because of their change in style, and even though they held the ball in their attacking zone for most of the last 15 minutes of play, they only got one shot off before falling to the Raiders on Wednesday night.

RAIDER REMARKS

  • Though he has played in other shutouts, this game counts as the first statistical shutout of the season for Ron Marchionna. A goalkeeper must play the entire game in order to earn the blank slate.
  • Men's soccer now holds a nine-game winning streak and a 12-4 overall series advantage against the Eagles.
  • Tonight's victory also marks the fourth time the Raiders have blanked Edgewood since 2012.
  • The Raiders have not allowed a single goal in each of their four victories this season
