Power Play Goals Pave Way To Victory

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Fresh off a 3-2 win last night, MSOE men's hockey went for the sweep of Saint John's (Minn.) when the same two teams met on the Kern Center ice one more time. The Raiders got two big power play goals in the second period and the defense did the rest as the Raiders complete the sweep of the Johnnies with a 2-0 shutout on Saturday.

FINAL SCORE
Saint John's – 0
MSOE RAIDERS – 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Unlike last night, MSOE (7-2) couldn't light the lamp in the first period after netting two in the opening 20 minutes on Friday. The same could be said for Saint John's (4-4-1) as the two teams entered the second frame tied at 0-0.
  • The middle stanza is where the Raiders did all their damage. It began with Christian Sabin and Kyle Herbster setting up Matt Hanewall for a power play goal at 13:36. Herbster would again connect with Hanewall just minutes later for another extra man strike with the second assist going to Gramm McCormack.
  • Up 2-0 heading into the third, the Raiders went into defensive lockdown mode. Though they allowed 15 shots to the Johnnies, the Red & White blocked shot after shot and the rest were pushed aside by goaltender Austin Schwab.
  • MSOE survived 6-on-5 play for about two minutes before a SJU penalty all but sealed the deal for the Raiders in the waning minutes of a 2-0 victory to finish off Thanksgiving week with a perfect 3-0 record.

RAIDER REMARKS

  • The Raiders 7-2 record over the first nine games of the season is the best mark since they went 6-1-2 to begin the 2019-20 campaign.
  • Austin Schwab's third shutout of the season puts the freshman one away from tying the school's single season record in that category.

WHO'S ON DECK
