Seniors Come Up Big For Men's Hockey

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – MSOE men's hockey returned to the Kern Center after a long absence to take on the Lions of Finlandia and celebrate their senior class in front of the home crowd. Each senior came up big on the ice and helped propel the Raiders to a 4-2 victory to begin their weekend series as the march towards the postseason continues.

FINAL SCORE
Finlandia – 2
MSOE RAIDERS – 4

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was only fitting that the top line for MSOE (13-7, 8-5 NCHA) scored the games opening goal shortly after celebrating the outgoing 2023 class. Senior captain Christian Sabin began the action with a goal at 8:39 from senior alternate captains Kyle Herbster and Matt Hanewall. That group would have to use their experience to face some adversity in the second period however.
  • Finlandia (3-15-1, 2-11 NCHA) took the reins to begin the middle frame and scored back to back goals, including one on the power play, to turn their one tally deficit into a lead of the same amount. Thankfully, the Raiders had an answer in them. Stuart Harley and Connor Karo helped Charlie Skinner tie the game at 15:54 and we'd enter the third all tied at 2-2.
  • The Red & White scored early and often in the final stanza. Fresh off his experience with Team USA, Hanewall began things with a power play goal at 1:54, a tally that would end up being the game winner. Sabin then scored his second of the contest to give the Raiders some breathing room with assists going to Herbster and Kevin Paganini at 5:01.
  • Spencer Northway stood tall in his first chance between the pipes for MSOE and stopped 18 shots in the 4-2 Red & White victory.

RAIDER REMARKS

  • The Raiders have now won three in a row against the Lions and are 7-2-1 in their last ten meetings.
  • The Raiders penalty kill had to be on their game tonight. They were put to work on nine different occasions and came up with the stop in eight of those situations.
  • Senior Kyle Herbster has a new single season career high for points with 29 and counting.
