Men's Hockey Sends Sabres Packing

MILWAUKEE – Coming off an upset of #6 St. Norbert last week, the MSOE Men's hockey team kept their momentum rolling with a 4-2 win over the Marian University Sabres in fiery, physical contest.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 4

Marian Sabres - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSOE (10-8-2, 5-7-1 NCHA) and Marian (7-13-0, 4-9-0 NCHA) traded shots to open the game before the Red and White broke through just past the midway point of the first period, with Seth Bernard finding the back of the net thanks to craft passing from teammates Eddie Shepler and Nikolai Charchenko.  The Sabres would answer on the power play less than two minutes later, knotting the game back up at 1-1, but the Raiders would strike back almost immediately, as Preston Park scored to put the Raiders back in the drivers seat a mere 37 seconds after the Marian goal.
  • In the second period, Luke Stevens was in the right place at the right time for MSOE in the opening minutes following the intermission as the Denver, Colo. native followed up a shot from Steve Guo and buried it in the back of the net, chasing the Sabres starting goalie just three minutes into the second frame.  With a 5-on-3 chance after several Raider penalties, Marian would add their second goal of the game with less than three minutes to play in the second, as the Raiders led 3-2 heading into the final 20 minutes.
  • The Raiders would have two chances on the powerplay to start the third period, but the Sabres would stand tough and shutdown both man-up opportunities for the Reda and White.  The Raider defense, led by Casey Roepke and Adam Smith, came through in the clutch for MSOE, helping goalie Austin Schwab shutdown any chance of a Sabre comeback.  Shepler added the icing on the cake with an empty-net goal as MSOE secured a 4-2 conference victory.
