Women's Hockey Falls to Spartans in Overtime

DUBUQUE, Iowa. – The MSOE women's hockey team made their return to the ice for the first time since December 14th on Tuesday night, as the Raiders pushed the Spartans of University of Dubuque to overtime before falling 1-0.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 0

Dubuque Spartans – 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders (2-10-2, 1-5-2 NCHA) and Spartans (2-9-1, 0-7-1 NCHA) met for the second time this season after a 3-1 Dubuque win back on November 29th, but the Raiders would look to take control early, recording eight shots in the first 6:13 of the first period.  Lilo Emerson led the charge for MSOE with three shots in the early flurry, but none found the back of the net.  The Red and White would go on the power play with 92 seconds to play in the first, unable to convert before the first period came to a close with no goals scored for either club.
  • The Red and White would keep the Spartans in check throughout the second period as goalie Laura Melizza looked to build momentum in her first game since winning an NCHA Three Stars of the Week award.  MSOE would go on the powerplay once again at the 16:55 mark of the second after a tripping call against Dubuque, but the Raiders were unable to find the back of the net despite clean looks from MaryFrancis Williams and Hannah BaumannKiera Ballweg would get one last shot off on the Raiders power play before it expired, along with the second period as both teams remained scoreless.
  • The Spartans would go on the offensive in the third period, outshooting the Raiders 13-6 in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Stacey Cloute and Alexandra Howe would block critical shots for the Red and White, as the teams geared up for overtime with zeroes on the scoreboard.  Despite a shot from Williams 42 seconds into OT, the Spartans would take control of the puck to muster three shots including the game winning goal at the 2:17 mark of the extra period as the Raiders fell in their final trip to Dubuque of the season.
