Men's Hockey Holds Off Saint Mary's

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's hockey team held off the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University on Tuesday evening, as the Raiders held off early and late offensive pushes from their opponent for a 6-4 home victory.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 6

Saint Mary's University - 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was the Cardinals (4-2-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) who would strike first, recording the first goal of the game just before the midway mark of the first period.  Saint Mary's would add another goal five minutes later to take an early 2-0 lead over MSOE (6-2-1, 4-1-1 NCHA).  The Raiders would have a powerplay opportunity in the game after an interference penalty was assessed against the Cardinals, with Luke Stevens capitalizing for the unassisted power play goal as MSOE went to the first intermission trailing 2-1.
  • Jacob Bosse recorded the first of his two goals just 1:15 into the second period, netting the equalizer for the Red and White unassisted of his own rebound.  Adam Smith would find the back of the net on a rocket of a one timer at the 9:27 mark, with the slick pass from Seth Bernard setting up the junior defensemen for the go-ahead goal.  With 5:50 left to play in the second frame, a holding penalty was assessed against Saint Mary's, and the Raiders would capitalize once more, with Bosse recording his second goal of the game to put MSOE ahead 4-2.
  • After an Ethan Thombs goal pushed the MSOE lead to 5-2 midway through the third period, the Cardinals would enter desperation mode as they pulled their goalie with under five minutes to play in the frame.  Saint Mary's would tally two goals with the extra attacker in a 39-second span, cutting the Raiders lead to just 5-4.  With the Cardinals seeing red, it was Ethan Mann who would shatter their comeback hopes, tallying the empty net goal to put the 6-4 win on ice for MSOE.
