Men's Tennis Wraps Fall Season at ITA Regionals

ST. PETER, Minn. – The MSOE men's tennis team made their way up north to Gustavus Adolphus College for the ITA Regional Championships over the weekend, as the Raiders wrapped up their fall season taking on competitors from all over the country.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The pairing of Randy Funez and Carlos Patino took on the top seeded team from host Gustavus Adolphus to start off the Men's Open Doubles, as the Red and White fought but fell to the eventual champions by a score of 3-8.
  • On the singles side, Funez would secure a win in his opening round bout against his familiar opponent from St. Norbert College, advancing to the round of 32 by a final score of 7-6, 6-3.  Funez would fall to the #9 ranked player in his bracket hailing from Luther College in his second match, as the Raiders run in the ITA Main Draw proved to be a brief one.
  • In the Open "B" Draw, sophomore Augusto Eiji Yamazaki went on a run to the tournament semi-finals, kicking off his stretch with a 6-1, 7-5 win over his opponent from Carthage.  Yamazaki would topple opponents from Coe College and UW-Stevens Point en route to the quarterfinals, where the Sao Paulo, Brazil native toppled UW-Whitewater 6-3, 6-2 as he was one of the final four players standing in the "B" bracket.
