Raiders Swept At Capital

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Capital benefited from a bases-loaded hit batter in the 11th inning of game two to collected a doubleheader sweep of the MSOE baseball team 4-1 and 3-2 Saturday at VA Memorial Stadium.

The Raiders (4-6) had scored a run in the ninth inning of the second game to forced extra inning, but the Crusaders (8-4) loaded the bases with no outs and capitalized.

In that final inning, Ryan Pearson singled to right field and advanced to third to lead off. MSOE then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases. After a popout to second base, Anthony Calabrese was hit by a pitch, allowing Pearson to score.

Coincidentally, it was a hit batter that had tied the game in the Raiders' half of the ninth inning. Trailing 2-1, senior David Miklosi led off with a pinch-hit single and was replaced on the bases by freshman Robby Uehara. Three batters later, junior Jake Roberts hit a double, giving the Red and White runners on second and third. Freshman Brad Schonder was hit by a pitch to load the bases and senior Maxwell Poeske was hit by another to force in Uehara with the tying run.

Capital struck first in game two, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, before the Raiders responded in the fifth. Schonder doubled with two outs and scored on a Poeske single when the Crusaders committed two errors.

CU added an unearned run of its own in the sixth inning, setting up the dramatic ninth inning.

Senior Adam Vlaj three eight innings, scattering six hits and striking out four. Junior Josh Kundinger allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning, while junior Ben Falls (0-2) suffered the loss in 1.1 innings of work.

Senior Wes Stasik hit a home run in the first game, as the Raider offense could not get on track against Capital starter Jeremy Finchum (2-0). Finchum scattered five hits over six inning, walking three and striking out two. Most important, he kept the Raiders off the scoreboard.

The Crusaders' offense gave him run support with single runs in the first and second inning, then made it 3-0 in the sixth.

Stasik hit a one-out home run to right field to get MSOE on the board, but that was all it could muster. The Red and White had just one other runner on third base in the game, loading the bases with two outs in the fifth inning. Finchum then got a strikeout to get out of danger.

On the mound, senior Luke Yogerst threw six innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out three. Freshman Brandon McCumber finished the last two innings, allowing a fourth run and striking out one.

The weekend was supposed to include a third game against Elmhurst Sunday, but that game was cancelled due to weather. The Raiders will return to action next weekend, hosting Northland in a doubleheader Saturday and Beloit in a doubleheader Sunday.
