MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The MSOE women's basketball team survived an overtime thriller against Benedictine University on Saturday afternoon, as the Raiders withstood comebacks from the Eagles in both regulation and overtime to secure another conference win.
FINAL SCORE
Benedictine University Eagles – 70
MSOE RAIDERS - 72
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MSOE (12-4, 7-2 NACC) worked their way to a six-point lead over the Eagles (11-6, 4-4 NACC) after a Lana Kerley three closed the first quarter at 16-10. In the second quarter, the Raiders' lead would reach as much as nine points after free throws from Dani Mendez but the Red and White's lead never cleared the double-digit mark, as the Eagles went on a 17-9 run to close the first half. The Red and White would lead just 30-29 after a Kerley buzzer-beating block prevented the Eagles from taking their first lead of the game.
- Despite the Raiders' best efforts, a mounting foul total prevented the Red and White's defense from being its typical self. The Eagles and Raiders would answer each other with each made basket in the third quarter, with Benedictine taking their first lead with 1:34 left in the third. The Red and White would find themselves trailing by five points with 2:47 left in regulation after the Eagles half-court trap disrupted the Raiders momentum. Back-to-back jumpers from Halena Hill would put the Raiders down 58-56, with the Raiders taking their final timeout with sixteen seconds to go.
- Kerley would convert on a last second layup to force overtime for the Raiders, who promptly shut down the Eagles in the extra period as the Red and White led 69-61 with 59 seconds remaining in overtime. Despite a late three from the Eagles that cut the MSOE lead to one possession, the Raiders would hang on to secure the win, as they look to stay in position for a home playoff game in the conference standings.
