Men's Hockey Takes #3 Spartans to Shootout

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's hockey team nearly completed the weekend sweep of #3 Aurora University, but a late powerplay goal from the Spartans had the teams tied after regulation, with the nationally ranked opposition getting the edge in the shootout.

FINAL SCORE

#3 Aurora  – 2
MSOE RAIDERS - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MSOE (9-11-3, 6-7-3 NCHA) once again jumped in front of #3 Aurora (18-4-1, 11-4-1 NCHA) as a first period feed from Alex Thundercloud found Cole Beilke, who buried the puck in the back of the net to give the Red and White an early advantage.  The Raiders would take advantage of a Spartan penalty later on in the first period, as the MSOE powerplay unit converted with just 3:07 remaining in frame, with Seth Bernard and Charles Fink adding helpers to the goal from Eddie Shepler.
  • The Raiders would lead for all of the second period, with the Spartans cutting the deficit in half as the teams neared the midway point of the contest.  As the second frame began to wind down, the penalties began to mount, with both teams PK units keeping the scoreboard as-is at 2-1.  The Raiders would stifle the Aurora offense as Shepler finished with three critical blocked shots, while Austin Schwab made save after save to keep the Red and White in the driver's seat.
  • With the Raiders on the brink of victory, an untimely boarding penalty would give Aurora life with just 2:23 left to play.  The Spartans needed just six seconds of powerplay time to record the equalizer, as the teams went to overtime to decide a victor.  The Raiders would have their chances both in overtime and the shootout, but the Spartans would find a way to sneak past the Red and White to avoid the weekend sweep with a 3-2 shootout win.
