LA CROSSE, Wis. –
Sam McPeak and
AJ Springer represented MSOE at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, highlighted by Springer come back to Milwaukee with first-team all-American honors.
McPeak kicked off the weekend, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday. McPeak sat perfectly in the middle of the pack through the first half of the race before a devasting clip of the water barrier to finish tenth in his heat and 19
th overall.
Springer toed the line on Friday for the 800-meter run prelims, competing in heat two. He sat towards the back of the back through the first 400 meters before making a massive move on the back stretch in perfect position, edging out the field in 1:50.09 for the heat win and the automatic qualifier for the final.
In the final on Saturday, Springer had that same strategy as he sat in seventh through the first 400-meters, making a move up to sixth in the backstretch, tracking down one more on the home straight to finish fifth, his second all-American honors this season and his first first-team honors.
"AJ had a great weekend" said head coach
Bill Massoels. "This has been his plan since indoor nationals from last year. From the prelims to the finals, he executed the race plan flawlessly and to be .54 of a second from second place shows his talent."
"Sam also executed the race plan, going through the mile in 4:45 and then clipped the barrier at the water but was still 6:00 at 2,000-meters. I truly believe that if he doesn't fall, he would've advanced to finals. Both performances set us up quite well from Cross Country this fall."
This ends a historic season for both the cross country and track & field program, where they captured the triple crown for the first time since 2022, along three different qualifiers and six school records falling.
