Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Freshman Jerad Tafoya scored two goals and the MSOE hockey team built a 3-2 lead, but could not hold on in falling to No 13 St. Scholastica 7-3 Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Raiders (0-2, 0-2 NCHA) dropped a season-opening series to the Saints (2-0, 2-0 NCHA) for the second-straight season.
CSS got the scoring started just 4:25 into the first period, as Derek Sutliffe struck for the first of three goals on the night while MSOE was on a power play.
The man advantage ended 37 seconds later and just two ticks after that, freshman Eric Tien scored to knot the score at 1-1. Senior Logan Bauman and freshman Omar Mullan assisted on the goal.
As the opening period was closing down, Tafoya scored his first goal of the night at 18:47 to give the Raiders their first lead of the night. Junior Evan Wilson assisted on the score.
The Saints opened the scoring in the second period, as well, with Matt Malenstyn netting an equalizer at 3:06.
Tafoya scored another go-ahead score, once again off an assist from Wilson, to stake his team to a 3-2 lead at 8:10.
St. Scholastica then seized the lead with a three-goal spurt in a 3:02 span to take control of the game. MSOE's lead was short-lived, as the equalizer came at 10:11 with the game-winning goal coming at 12:12 of the second period. The home team added one more goal at 13:13 to take a 5-3 lead into the final period.
Sutliffe finished his hat trick with goals early and late in the final frame, scoring at 1:25 and on the power play at 17:01.
The Saints held a 38-29 shot advantage in the game, with Tyler Bruggeman stopping 26 shots for the win. A pair of goaltenders saw time for MSOE, with freshman Zach Woodman making his collegiate debut in the starting lineup and making 24 saves in two periods. Sophomore Austin Campbell played the final period and had seven saves.
The Raiders remain on the road their next time out, heading to Michigan to take on No. 6 Adrian in a Friday-Saturday series.
