Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Freshman Sara McConnell and Shannon Curtis combined to allow three hits and strike out 13 as the MSOE softball team swept Alverno in a doubleheader, 1-0 and 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (13-9, 5-5 NACC) have now posted three-straight shutouts and pushed their season total to eight.
McConnell (8-3) took her place in the circle and did not allow a hit until a single to lead off the fifth inning. She struck out seven and walked just one in her second-straight shutout and third of the season.
The MSOE offense struggled to get much traction in the first game, despite seven hits. It was three-straight singles in the third inning that proved to be the difference. Freshman Kailey Smith had the third hit in the series and plated sophomore Katie Ready for the only run McConnell would need.
The pitcher and sophomore Lauren Boyle each collected two hits in the game.
Curtis (3-5) took the ball in game one, allowing just two hits. She struck out six and walked just one in shutting down the Inferno (6-17, 1-9 NACC) offense.
Boyle led the Raider attack at the plate, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. She and senior Julie Windish each had RBI singles in the first inning to stake the Red and White to a 2-0 lead.
Boyle then added a two-run single in the third inning and an RBI double in the fifth to pushed the lead to 5-0.
Windish also had a multi-hit game in the nightcap, adding a pair of runs scored.
The Raiders return to action Saturday in a doubleheader at Aurora.
