Box Score 2 LISLE, Ill. – The MSOE women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to open competition at the Eagle Classic, hosted by Benedictine Friday.
The Raiders (11-17) fell to North Central (20-12) in their first match 25-18, 25-19, 25-18, then took on the host Eagles (12-16) and dropped a tough three-setter, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23.
Freshman Hannah Pekarek led MSOE against NACC-foe BenU, registering 11 kills in the match. Senior Leah Hendricks finished with seven kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Abby Born had 25 assists and six kills on just seven attacks for a .857 attack percentage.
Beckie Whitmarsh had a match-best 12 kills for the tournament hosts, while Erin Wiegand added nine.
The Raiders hit well in the first (.278) and third (.250) sets against Benedictine, but seemingly could not get over the hump to dropping tight frames in each game. They outhit the Eagles for the match .205 to .192 and had one more kill (41-40). The difference came in the service, where BenU had a decisive 11-3 advantage in service aces.
Against NCC, Hendricks and junior Rachel Lynde led the way with six kills apiece.
Amanda Walker finished with 13 kills and hit .571 to pace North Central.
MSOE hit just .057 and was outscored by NCC 53.0 to 33.0 in the opening match. The Cardinals attacked at a .208 clip, including .379 in the second set.
The Raiders close out the tournament, as well as their 2015 season, Saturday. They open the day at 9:30 a.m. against Illinois Tech.
