Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. – Freshman Michael Romund scored with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation to send the MSOE hockey team to a dramatic 3-2 victory over UW-Stout Tuesday evening at the Fanetti Community Center.
The Raiders (5-3) had led the Blue Devils (4-4-2) 2-1 well into the third period until the home team evened the score with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, but Romund's score averted overtime for the visitors.
Romund's second goal of the season came courtesy of assists from sophomores Clint Garris and Jerad Tafoya. It gave MSOE its second-straight road win over a UW state school following a 2-1 victory at No. 13 UW-River Falls its last time out Nov. 21.
The goal is the latest game-winner on record in the program's history, bettering Josh Nickol's game-winning goal with five seconds remaining at Northland Jan. 16, 1999. It was also MSOE's first last-minute winner since sophomore Omar Mullan nabbed the game-winner with just 18 seconds remaining in overtime Nov. 29, 2014, against Aurora.
Playing their first game in 18 days, the Raiders got off on the wrong foot in the game. Stout scored just 1:15 into the first period for an early 1-0.
Fortunately, the Red & White quickly responded as junior Cody Ganchar evened the score at the 5:17 mark off assists from senior Nick LaRue and junior Gage Christianson. Junior James Ring then pushed the Raiders ahead with a shorthanded goal at 8:33 of the second period. Tafoya also had a hand in Ring's score, as did sophomore Zach Simpson.
The Blue Devils capitalized on one of three power plays in the game to even the score, equalizing in the game 54 seconds into a charging penalty.
MSOE was whistled for five penalties in the game, but did not earn a power play as both Stout penalties were off-setting.
Senior Nick Kohn made 27 saves on the night as the home team held a 29-23 shot advantage. Chase Hollander made 20 saves for the Blue Devils.
The Red & White defeated Stout on its home ice for the second-straight season after a 6-0 win in 2014. It has now won four-straight games, all on the road, against UW schools after having not defeated a state school in program history.
The Raiders return to the ice Friday, opening a weekend series at UW-Superior at 7:05 p.m.
