GLENDALE, Wis. – Sophomore Tom Smith went 4-0 over his singles and doubles matches to lead the MSOE men's tennis team to a split of matches on its first day of conference play Saturday at Elite Sports Club-River Glen.
The Raiders (5-9, 1-1 NACC) opened the day with a 6-3 morning loss to Edgewood and bounced back to shut out Marian 9-0.
Against the Eagles, the match was tight throughout, with three of the six singles matches going three sets. MSOE led 2-0 after claiming a pair of doubles wins, but was only able to win one singles match in the loss.
Smith was the singles winner, claiming a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 slot. He teamed with sophomore John Price for an 8-3 doubles win in the No. 2 position. Price dropped his No. 3 singles match in three sets, as did senior Matt Slaughter at No. 4.
Sophomores David Gorodetsky and Mason Sauder combined on an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to net the Red & White its only other point of the match.
In the second match of the day, the Raiders rolled with ease. They won the top five singles matches by the score of 6-0, 6-0. Then, at No. 6 singles, it was 6-1, 6-1. Doubles play was relatively closer, with a score of 8-0 at No. 1, 8-2 at No. 2 and 8-1 in the third position.
Smith played at No. 3 singles against Marian, while pairing with Price for the No. 2 doubles win. Price was the team's No. 2 singles player.
Senior Zachary Dam won at both No. 1 singles and doubles, pairing with Slaughter in the doubles match. The final three singles places were filled by senior Andrew Kosasih at No. 4, sophomore Kyle Fassbender at No. 5 and freshman Austin Fite at No. 6.
Fassbender and sophomore Austin Campbell scored the No. 3 doubles win.
The Raiders return to action Friday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
