Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE - The MSOE softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Alverno, 5-3 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Alverno Field.
The Raiders (10-14, 3-7 NACC) overcame early 2-0 deficits to tie the game in each game, but could not overcome the Inferno (16-8, 6-4 NACC).
Alverno struck for a pair of runs in the first inning of each game. In the first game, MSOE scratched across a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Lauren Boyle plated junior Beth Young on a suicide squeeze. Two batters later, Boyle came in to score on a ground out.
The Inferno quickly went ahead in its next at bat and added to its lead with two more runs in the fourth.
The Raiders rallied for a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by freshman Laryn Brinkman. Unfortunately, she was one of two Red & White runners standed in scoring position when the inning ended.
Sophomore Shannon Curtis (6-9) went the distance in the circle, striking out five and allowing three earned runs.
Alverno scored a walk-off win in game two, scoring the winning run on an two-out error. A lead-off reached third after a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Curtis, on in relief, struck out the next batter for two outs and induced a ground ball that was misplayed and allowed the winning run to score.
Freshman Caitlyn Moran had a strong start for MSOE, lasting 5.1 innings and striking out four. She worked around five hits, walking none and allowing just two runs.
AC carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning when the Raiders scored two runs to even the game at 2-2. Moran led off the frame with a double and came around to score two batters later on freshman Alex Cook's single up the middle. Another two batters later, Boyle plated Cook with a single of her own.
The Raiders will look to return to their winning ways Saturday, hosting Aurora in a doubleheader at MSOE Athletic Field.
