Box Score MILWAUKEE – Senior Sarabeth Haworth and junior Abby Born had 11 kills apiece to lead the MSOE women's volleyball team to a sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran, 25-12, 31-29, 25-22, Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (5-15, 4-7 NACC) started strong, hitting .314 in the opening set and held off the Warriors (12-15, 4-7 NACC) throughout the rest of the match.
Both Haworth and Born posted double-doubles, with Haworth adding 19 digs and Born 24 assists and eight digs for a near triple-double. Born hit .409 in the match, as well. Sophomore Hannah Pekarek added nine kills and 22 digs in the match, while sophomore Elsey Kohlman had eight.
Britley Grulke had 11 kills to lead Wisconsin Lutheran.
MSOE wasted little time in establishing itself in the match, scoring nine of the first 10 points of the first game and opening an 18-4 advantage. The lead peaked at 15 points before the team easily closed out the frame.
The second set started like the first, with the Red & White quickly jumping out to a 9-1 lead. This time, however, WLC slowly fought its way back into the match and managed to tie the score at 17-17 before taking the lead on multiple occasions down the stretch. It was a dog fight down to the end, until, tied at 29-29, the Raiders tallied a block and a Haworth kill to end the marathon game.
In the decisive final set, the visitors looked to set the tone, remaining close early on and owning a 7-5 lead. MSOE responded with nine-straight points to take control of the game. The Warriors did fend off four match points before a Haworth kill capped the sweep.
After getting off to the hot start on the attacking front in the first set, the Raiders' defense did most of the heaving lifting by limiting the Warriors to just .042 attacking in the match. That culminated with -.022 in the final set. MSOE continued its excellent back row defense with a season-high 80 digs despite the match lasting just three sets. Offensively, the team cooled off a bit, relatively, over the final two sets and finished the match hitting .178.
Senior Rachel Luczak had a career day, contributing 15 of those digs to go with a pair of service aces.
With league play complete, the Raiders return to the court Tuesday at Cardinal Stritch, before a weekend trip to Illinois Wesleyan's tournament.
