MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Junior Mason Sauder won both his singles and doubles match to lead the MSOE men's tennis team in action against Cornell in a tight 5-4 loss Saturday morning at the Small Multi-Sport Center Arena.
The Raiders (1-7) split the singles points against the Rams (3-2), but won just one of the doubles matches in falling. MSOE then fell to St. Ambrose in the day's second match.
Sauder scored his first singles win of the season, playing at No. 3 and holding off his opponent in a thrilling 6-4, 5-7, 12-10 victory. In doubles play, he paired with senior Tyler Haanen in the No. 2 position for the 8-3 victory.
Sophomores Ryan Runke and Austin Fite also posted singles wins, each in straight-sets by identical scores of 6-2, 6-3. Runke played at No. 5 and Fite competed in the No. 6 slot.
Runke then had a hand in both Red & White points against the Bees. He paired with Fite for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Then, in singles play, he defeated his opponent at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Junior Kyle Fassbender had a strong singles match, as well, winning the first set and pushing his opponent to three sets before falling, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
MSOE is back in action next Saturday in Eau Claire, Wis., playing Dubuque and UW-Eau Claire.
