Softball Season Comes to an End at Lakeland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Seniors Lauren Boyle and Katie Ready combined for five hits in game one, but it was not enough as the MSOE softball team capped its season with a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Lakeland Saturday afternoon at Muskie Softball Field.

The Raiders (12-20, 8-14 NACC) nearly overcame a 4-1 deficit in the seventh inning of game one, falling 4-3. The Muskies then hurled a two-hit shutout over five innings in an 8-0 second game.

Trailing by three runs heading to the seventh inning of the opener, Boyle led off with a single and senior Beth Young followed with a single of her own. Two batters later, a walk loaded the bases with just one out. Ready then singled through the left side to score a run and make it 4-2.

MSOE then tallied another run on a wild play that ended the game. Freshman Rachel Ziemba singled up the middle to make it 4-3, but two players were caught in run downs after the throw home. The catcher chased one runner back to third to apply the tag to two runners to end the threat.

Junior Shannon Curtis (6-9) went the distance in her final start of the season, allowing just four hits and four walks over six innings. She struck out four.

Lakeland opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning and the Raiders immediate answered back. With one out in the second, sophomore Caitlyn Moran singled and moved to third when Boyle followed with another single. Moran then came around to score on a deep foul flyout to left field to make it 1-1.

The Muskies would pulled ahead in their second inning, capitalizing on a pair of unearned runs, to take a 4-1 lead.

Boyle finished with three hits and Ready had two in the game. Freshman Emily Snow extended her hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the fourth inning. The streak came to an end in game two, as she went 0-for-1 with a walk.

In the second game, LC jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back. The home team tacked on two more runs in the fourth and scored twice more in the fifth to send the game to a premature end.

Ziemba had a triple and Boyle had a double for the Raiders, who finished with just two hits in the contest. Boyle capped her career on a six-game hitting streak, going 10-for-19 over those final games. The run pushed her career batting average above .300 to .304.
