Hockey Holds on For 3-3 Tie With St. Scholastica

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but had to hold on late to come away with a 3-3 tie with St. Scholastica Friday night at the Kern Center.

It was all Raiders (5-5-4, 2-4-3 NCHA) through the first two periods as MSOE was in control with a 3-0 lead through goals from senior Gage Christianson, junior Chris Hinrichs and freshman Evan Kearns.

Then, it the final period of regulation, the Saints (7-6-1, 5-3-1 NCHA) came alive and stormed back to tie the game. The visitors outshot the Red & White 21-9 and pulled back all three goals they needed to force overtime.

In the extra period, the play was end to end with each team getting good looks on goal, but neither striking for the winner.

Hinrich's opened the scoring when he netted his goal unassisted with a persistent defensive effort in the first period. He forced a turnover just inside the neutral zone on the defensive end of the ice. He was the first to the loose puck and skated in on the CSS goal, slotting a shot inside the far post at 12:41 of the opening period.

It was his second-straight game with a goal.

Kearn's goal doubled the Raiders advantage and came after he won a face-off. He flicked the puck to the boards, where freshman Kevin Shand played a quick pass to junior Dylan Dailey at the point. His shot was then redirected into the net by Kearns at 6:28 of the second period.

MSOE then made it 3-0 at 12:10, with Christianson netting a power play goal. He got a pass back from junior Jerad Tafoya near the left face-off circle and uncorked a wrist shot to beat the goalie.

The Saints got on the board at 5:22 of the third period on the first of two power play goals. They would then tie the score with a pair of goals in somewhat quick succession. First at 10:10, then with another power play at 13:12. The goal came just seconds into the man advantage off a face-off, with Mark Whiteley scoring from the point.

Junior Zach Woodman finished with 34 saves on the night. For St. Scholastica, Peter Megariotis started played 32:10 in goal with Zane Steeves playing the final 32:50. Each goalie made 14 saves for the visitors.
