St. Scholastica Overtakes Hockey with Four-Goal Third

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – St. Scholastica scored four times in the third period to upend the MSOE hockey team 6-4 Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (5-6-4, 2-5-3 NCHA) led heading into the third period for the second-straight day, this time 4-2, against the Saints (8-6-1, 6-3-1 NCHA) only to see the visitors rally to take points in the contest.

On Friday, it was a 3-3 tie, this time MSOE just could not hold off CSS.

For the second-straight day, it was the Red & White striking first when senior Jordan Guth lit the lamp at 8:36 of the opening period off assists from junior Brett Wagner and sophomore Eric Tien.

St. Scholastica would answer back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. Derek Sutliffe equalized just over four minutes later and Brandon Parrone put his team ahead less than two minutes into the second period.

The Raiders stormed into the lead behind senior Gage Christianson, as the Alaska native struck for back-to-back goals at 12:04 and 16:09 to put them back in the lead. Juniors James Ring and Zach Simpson played roles in his tying goal and sophomore Matthew Romund set up his go-ahead score.

Junior Chris Hinrichs then scored a goal in his third-straight game in the dying seconds of the second period to stake MSOE to a 4-2 lead. Wagner picked up his second assist of the day on the goal.

As was the case Friday, the third period Saturday belonged to the Saints. Despite taking just seven shots in the frame, Brandon Millin gave the visitors goals at 6:14 on the power play and again at 8:08. Cole Golka then broke the tie with the man advantage at 16:17 and Brett Radford put in an empty-net goal with 37 seconds remaining in the game.

MSOE finished with a 39-26 shot advantage, but the team was limited to just one power play in the game. CSS went 3-for-5 on the power play, playing with an extra man for eight of the 20 minutes of the decisive third period.

Junior Zach Woodman got the start in goal and made 21 saves. After playing the second half of Friday's contest and earning the draw, Zane Steeves earned a start in goal for St. Scholastica and stopped 35 shots for the win.

The Raiders will hit the ice once again next weekend, hosting Finlandia in a weekend series at the Kern Center.
