AURORA, Illinois – The MSOE men's tennis team boasted three double winners as it scored a second-straight win to start league play with a 7-2 victory over Aurora Saturday afternoon at Washington Middle School.
The Raiders (3-14, 2-0 NACC) swept the doubles points off the Spartans (3-2, 1-1 NACC), then claimed four of the six doubles matches for a 2-0 week.
Seniors John Price and Tom Smith were double winners for the second-straight day while freshman Luke Nelson also nabbed a pair of points for MSOE.
Price paired with freshman David Chon at No. 1 doubles and secured an 8-2 win. Then, in singles play, Price was relatively untroubled in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Smith and Nelson teamed for the victory at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Smith played at No. 3 in singles and won 6-4, 6-1. Nelson was slotted in at No. 6 and shut his opponent out, 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles pairing of senior Mason Sauder and junior Brad Phoenix scored an 8-5 victory in the No. 3 position. Meanwhile, junior Ryan Runke rounded out the winners on the day at No. 4 singles, prevailing 6-0, 6-3.
The Raiders will look to continue their winning form when they return to the courts next Saturday, hosting Edgewood and Marian at McKinley Marina. The Edgewood match starts at 10 a.m. and the Marian match follows at 2 p.m.
