Men's Tennis Splits NACC Doubleheader

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's tennis team fell in a tightly-contested 5-4 match with Edgewood but bounced back to sweep Marian 9-0 in a pair of league matched Saturday at the McKinley Marina Tennis Courts.

The Raiders (4-15, 3-1 NACC) pushed two matches against the Eagles to three sets and forced tie-breakers in sets in two other matches, showing just how close the match was.

MSOE took two of the three doubles points, with senior Tom Smith and freshman Luke Nelson scoring an 8-1 win at No. 2 and senior Mason Sauder pairing with junior Brad Phoenix for an 8-5 win at No. 3.

In the singles competition, the Red & White got their points from the bottom of the lineup. Senior Austin Campbell won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. Then, Nelson completed the match double with a win at No. 6, 6-0, 6-2.

In the No. 3 and No. 4 matches, Smith and junior Ryan Runke fell short in three sets after claiming the openers. In the top two positions, each of the first sets were forced into tie-breaks.

The Raiders were then able to shuffle the lineup against Marian and still coast to the victory.

The pairing of Smith and Nelson at No. 1 singles scored an 8-3 win and Sauder/Phoenix moved up to No. 2 and won 8-2. Campbell played at No. 3 with senior Tyler Haanen and the duo posted an 8-0 shutout.

Price did not drop a game at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Campbell was nearly as perfect with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Nelson continued a perfect day at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Smith at No. 2 and Runke at No. 3 won by identical 6-3, 6-0 scores. Meanwhile, Haanen manned the No. 6 position and won 6-3, 6-2.

MSOE plays all four home league matches in a row, returning to the court next Saturday at McKinley Marina against Concordias Chicago and Wisconsin.
