Women's Volleyball Fend Off Cougars

MILWAUKEE – Tired of playing five set matches, the MSOE women's volleyball team defeated Concordia University Chicago despite dropping the first set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a kill from Emma Schattschneider to open the match, Concordia Chicago (8-10, 1-5 NACC) trickled off the next four points to hold the advantage throughout the first set. A kill from Ana Knutson followed by an error from the Cougars tied the set at nine as the two began to trade points until a kill from Schattschneider gave the Raiders a 18-17 lead. The Cougars quickly took the back the lead and after back-to-back kills from Ashley Murphy gave them a 22-21 lead looking to put things away, the Cougars rattled off the final four points to take the set 25-22.
  • The Raiders wasted no time setting the tone for the second set, exploding out to a 9-2 lead, including four straight kills to start. The Cougars didn't back down however cutting the deficit to one making the score 10-9 before the Raiders pulled away to lead 21-12, capped by a block from Samantha Johnson and Ava Larson. The Cougars continued to pull themselves back in to make things interesting closing their gap to within three, but Schattschneider put the final nail in to tie the match with a kill to win the set 25-21.
  • The Cougars flipped things around in the third set, starting with a 5-1 lead before the Raiders tied things at eight after back-to-back kills from Emma Schattschneider. After the Cougars took the next point, a string a errors from them put the Raiders ahead 11-9, with more errors trickling in as they took a 14-10 lead. Not allowing the deficit grow even more, Knutson led the charge late with a kill and an ace to take the third set 25-19. The Raiders started off the fourth set with a bang, leading 16-6, including three aces from Knutson in the middle of a 7-0 run. Annabella Visak added two more service aces in a 7-1 run that followed before Knutson capped off the match with a kill to seal things 25-11.
