Women's Hockey Debuts with 3-1 WIn

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The MSOE women's hockey team competed in the first game in program history on Friday afternoon, as the Red and White emerged victorious with a 3-1 win over Marian University, tallying the first win in team history.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 3

Marian Sabres - 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) and Sabres (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) exchanged shots to start the game before Marian took their only lead of the game at the 8:10 mark of the first period, putting the Red and White behind 1-0.  MSOE would answer mere minutes later, taking advantage of their first power play opportunity of the game, as the combination of Anika Einbeck and Lexi Jackson found Gray Mandia, who buried the puck in the back of the net for the historic first goal.
  • After stifling the Sabres power play to open the second period, MSOE took their first lead of the game at the midway point, with Hannah Baumann putting the Red and White up 2-1 off of a slick feed from Helen Bechthold just after the Raiders third power-play opportunity expired.
  • In the third period Maddie Williams would thread a pass to MaryFrancis Williams, who extended the Raiders lead, as goalie Laura Melizza recorded 20 straight saves after surrendering a lone goal in the first period.  Kiera Ballweg recorded three blocked shots as the MSOE defense stifled the Sabres down the stretch, holding the Marian powerplay scoreless.  Despite playing two minutes with an empty net to close the game, the Sabres were unable to put another past the Red and White, as the Raiders kicked off a historic weekend with a 3-1 win.
