Women's Hockey Comes Up Short in Kern Center Debut

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's hockey team made their home debut on Saturday night, closing out a two-game series against Marian University with a 1-0 loss in a back-and-forth, physical contest.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 0

Marian Sabres - 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) and Sabres (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) set the tone early, as Marian earned a power play less than a minute into the contest, but the MSOE penalty kill held strong all game, shutting down all five of the Sabres power play opportunities across the 60 minutes of play.  Senior Anika Einbeck had a good scoring look as the first period winded down, but was unable to convert as the first period ended scoreless despite threats from both teams.
  • After a chippy second period saw the scoreboard stay clean, the Raiders and Sabres began to turn up the intensity in period three, as the raucous Kern Center crowd continued to voice their support for the Red and White.  After killing off penalties for nearly the first four minutes of the frame, the Raiders went on the power play at the 3:34 mark, seeing shots from both Amy MacDonald and Amelia Jutz go just wide.  After trading shots with less than five minutes left to play, the Raiders went on the power play at the 16:55 mark, looking to cap off the historic day with a bang.  In a cruel twist of fate, Marian would win the ensuing faceoff and register a short-handed goal a mere nine seconds later, putting the Raiders behind 1-0 as the clock wound down on the historic day.  Goalie Jenna Kent was a standout for the Red and White, recording 28 straight saves for MSOE in the defensive-minded affair.

QUOTE FROM THE COMMISSIONER
"MSOE brings a great reputation to the NCHA, they bring a solid coaching staff, athletes who want to play, and want to win.  They're going to bring an elevated level of play to our conference," said Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Commissioner Jim Olson.  "The quality of players and teams in our conference brings a great dynamic, it's great to see parity and the growth of women's hockey.  Just seeing what MSOE is doing here, starting a program in short order and getting off to a good start, not a lot of programs start that quickly and can say they won their first game."

WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders will host Lawrence University on Friday, November 8th in the Kern Center as they kick-off conference play.  Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
