Women's Hockey Secures First Home Win vs Lawrence

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's hockey team clashed with the Vikings of Lawrence University on Friday night, as the Raiders won their first game in front of their own fans with a thrilling 3-2 win as the Red and White special teams proved to be a difference maker.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 3

Lawrence Vikings - 2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Raiders (2-1-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) took the first lead of the game over the Vikings (0-3-0, 0-1-0 NCHA) at the midway point of the first period, as Lilo Emerson ripped a shot from the point on the Raiders first powerplay of the evening, scoring the first goal in the Kern Center for the program with assists from Gray Mandia and Arial Lapsa.  The Raiders would get another minute of powerplay time after 4-on-4 action to close the quarter but were unable to capitalize as they went into the first intermission up 1-0.
  • The Raiders would add another goal at the 6:44 mark of the second period, as Amelia Jutz found Helen Bechthold who snapped a perfect wrist shot past the Lawrence goalie, extending the MSOE lead.  The Vikings would answer just a minute later, narrowly sneaking one past goalie Jenna Kent.  Lawrence would tie the game up on an unassisted goal with only two minutes left in the second half, as the Raiders and Vikings went to the final intermission knotted up at 2 goals apiece.
  • The Red and White came through in the clutch, as MSOE killed two penalties in the final period, going a perfect three-for-three on the penalty killed for the evening.  Sara Kopf would capitalize for the Raiders at the 8:27 mark of the third, scoring the second powerplay goal of the evening for MSOE.  After getting set for a faceoff with just over three minutes left in the game, Lawrence would pull their goalie for the extra skater, as Hannah Baumann and the MSOE defense stood tall before a tripping penalty against the Vikings sent the Raiders back on the power play with less than two minutes to play.  The Raiders would bleed down the clock as they secured their first win in front of the Kern Center faithful by final score of 3-2.
