Olsen Earns First Win in Softball's Split at Benedictine

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – MSOE softball resumed conference play on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against the Eagles of Benedictine University, as freshman Finnley Olsen recorded her first career win in Game 2.

RESULTS
MSOE RAIDERS – 1
Benedictine Eagles – 5

MSOE RAIDERS – 6
Benedictine Eagles – 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • The Raiders (8-10, 3-1 NACC) trailed the Eagles (9-7, 2-4 NACC) after Benedictine brought two across in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of an MSOE error.  The Raiders looked to end their cold streak at the plate in the top of the second, as the Raiders loaded the bases with no outs.  Jenna O'Donnell was thrown out at home after trying to score on a wild pitch, but the Raiders broke through after Caroline Fouras and Faith Matta drew back-to-back walks to bring Carlee Emery home.
    • The Raiders were unable to bring another run across, as they left eight players on base in Game 1.  Benedictine added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings as MSOE finished with four total hits and two errors as they looked to bounce back after the 5-1 loss in the first contest.
  • Game 2
    • The Raiders took the lead in the top first of the first, as Matta singled to open the game before swiping second base and advancing to third on a throwing error by the Eagles.  Matta would score and Jayda Nelson would reach first after consecutive errors, but the Eagles would immediately answer back, scoring two in the bottom of the inning.
    • Emery opened the second inning with a single before Jocelyn Clodi drew a walk, bringing up Celine Pacheco who would drop a sacrifice bunt to advance her teammates into scoring position.  Three straight singles from Adeline Kortman, Matta and Fouras would bring the lead back to the Raiders, 3-2.  Jenna Trewyn would hit a sacrifice fly, followed up by a Nelson RBI single to up the Raiders lead to 5-2.
    • The Raiders would add one more run in the third on a Clodi solo homerun, as Finnley Olsen settled in on the mound. The Eagles would bring two across in the bottom of the seventh, but the Raiders hung on to secure a 6-4 victory. Olsen would finish with a complete game, striking out two and walking one, on the way to recording her first career win.
