Men's Volleyball Gets Season Opening Win at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The MSOE men's volleyball team kicked off their season Saturday morning in the Buckeye State, taking on University of Mount Union. In a battle of both teams receiving national votes, MSOE grabbed the late edge in all three sets to defeat Mount Union.

RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 3

Mount Union - 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side controlled the momentum in the first set, despite MSOE (1-0, 0-0 NACC) staying efficient as they hit .433 compared to Mount Union (1-1, 0-0 MCVL) who was .179. The first multi-point separation came when Gregory Kubon killed one from Parker Rings to make it 10-8 but Mount Union wasn't phased retaking the lead at 11-8. Back-to-back kills from Filip Topor and Callan Harris brought the lead up to 19-17 but once again were overtaken by Mount Union, who took the set to set-point leading 26-25. Three straight kills from the Red & White sealed the set with Harris with the finishing point to win 28-26.
  • Thomas led a 3-0 run to open the second set but Mount Union was able to regroup and take their first lead of the second set at the midway point 13-12. An ace from Harris brought the lead back to MSOE 15-14 and the two traded the lead before the set was tied at 25 all. Topor and Rings would team up for the block before Harris ended the set once again with a kill to win 27-25.
  • Mount Union established themselves early in the third set before John Wolf would tie up the set with a kill and Harris would take the lead 8-7. Mount Union wouldn't see the lead again until they led 18-17. The Raiders finally swung momentum onto their side when it mattered most, closing the set on a 8-2 run, with Matthew Schultz knocking in the final two kills to win the set 25-20.
