Raiders Upset #7 Banana Slugs; Schultz Sets Program Best in Sweep Over Pointers

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball put together two straight masterpiece performances on Sunday inside the Kern Center, first upsetting #7 University of California-Santa Cruz, and then sweeping University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as Matthew Schultz puts together the best kill percentage in program history for a single match.

#7 UC-Santa Cruz – 0

RV MSOE RAIDERS – 3
Wisconsin-Stevens Point – 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. #7 UC-Santa Cruz
    • Trading back-and-forth early, Schultz got MSOE (7-4, 0-0 NACC) rolling early, beginning a 10-2 run to lead 16-9. The slimmest margin Santa Cruz (11-2) would get it down to was to five just a few rallies later until Seth Thomas began to heat up, making three kills down the stretch, including the final kill, to take the set 25-15.
    • The Banana Slugs found a rhythm early, opening on a 4-0 run until Hunter Carroll broke it up to get the Raiders on the scoreboard in set two. Down 14-9, the Raiders stormed back on a 7-1 run as Thomas capped it with a kill to take the lead 16-15. Trading up to 20, the Raiders finished on a 5-0 run, with Thomas sealing it with back-to-back aces, to win 25-21.
    • Going back and forth to open the third, the Raiders went on an 8-2 run with Callan Harris capping it to lead 12-6 at the midway point. The Banana Slugs stormed back to bring it down to a one point difference until Schultz began to become a menace at the net, blocking three straight attacks in the middle of a 6-1 run to lead 23-17. Getting to set point, the Banana Slugs continued to attack trying to force a fourth set until Schultz ended it to win 25-22.
    • Thomas led the match, having eleven kills, while Gregory Kubon and Hunter Carroll each had nine with Parker Rings handling setting duties making 38 assists. James Zippay dug out eight balls, while Carroll made his presence known at the net, having five blocks while Schultz totaled four.
  • vs. Wisconsin-Stevens Point
    • A block from Thomas kicked started the second match as the Raiders jumped out to a 5-2 advantage to start. Stevens Point (5-7) cut it down to a one-point difference at the midway point as the Raiders didn't separate themselves until late when an ace from Rings put the Raiders ahead 23-18. Kubon finished off the set, killing a pass from Rings to take it 25-20.
    • Schultz was filthy at the service line middle of the second set, acing three straight to lead the Pointers 11-6 to start. A 4-0 run with a pair of kills from Kubon jumped the lead to 18-11 as Ryan Huff checked in at set point to ace it perfectly to win the set 25-17. The Raiders continued to produce long runs in the third, going on a 9-2 run as Huff aced two more serves to lead 19-10. Schultz killed four of the remaining six points needed to finish off his massive performance to win 25-13.
    • Harris had a match high 14 kills with Schultz killing 13 on 14 attempts for a kill percentage of .929 for his record. Harris also dug out eight balls while Schultz and Huff each led with three aces.
