#19 Men's Volleyball Falls Short in Intense Five Set Thriller at Augustana

MOLINE, Ill. – In a complete thriller over in the Quad Cities, the MSOE men's volleyball team falls short after making a late comeback at Augustana College Saturday night.

RESULT
#19 MSOE – 2

Augustana - 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After going back and forth to begin, Augustana (2-2, 0-0 CCIW) made the first jump to lead 10-7. MSOE (4-3, 0-0 NACC) came back late to tie the set at 22 when Seth Thomas knocked in a kill as the two sides went back and forth, well past the 25-point mark. The Vikings would come away with the final point, taking the set 30-28. The Raiders attacked set two quickly, going on a 4-0 run to begin with Callan Harris making two kills before the Vikings eventually tied it at six. Another run that saw Thomas make two aces to lead 14-10 at the midway point. The lead grew to as large as seven after Bram Griever killed one from James Zippay before pulling away to win the second 25-20.
  • The Vikings led early in set three until the Raiders tied the set at 17 when Matthew Schultz made back-to-back aces. After the Vikings got the lead back, the Raiders cut it back to a one-point difference three separate times but couldn't get over the hump to drop the set 25-23. The Vikings tried to end things in four, but the Raiders went on a 5-0 run, capped by a solo block from John Wolf to lead 13-12 at the midway point. The Vikings got to match point, but role reversed when Raiders got to set point leading 25-24. A miscue from the Vikings forced a fifth set with the Raiders winning 29-27. The Vikings would put the medal to the metal in the fifth, leading 7-2 before pulling away to win 15-11.
