Raiders Catch Fire To Defeat Concordia Chicago

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The MSOE women's basketball team shot a school-record 62.8 percent from the field and rode a fast start to a 76-63 victory over Concordia Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (12-4, 8-3 NACC) jumped out to a 19-point lead in the first half and never looked back in avenging a loss to the Cougars (9-7, 7-6 NACC) earlier this month.

Sophomore Shaylan Reardon led the way with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Three more players reached double-figures, including sophomore Holly Denfeld's 12 points. Sophomore Corrine Sanford scored 11 and senior Bre Strong added 10.

Jaela DeJean and Morgan Jahnke each scored 16 points to lead CUC, which was held over 11 points below its season scoring average.

The Raiders got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 19-5 lead by the 11:00 mark of the opening half, having held the Cougars scoreless for the opening 5:55 of the game. They then expanded their lead to 19 points at 30-11 and took a 42-24 lead into halftime.

After the intermission, MSOE continued to pull away, building its lead as high as 22 at 59-37 with 9:50 to play.

Concordia responded with a 10-0 run, but could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

The Raiders shot around 70 percent for much of the first half and was well above 50 in the second to finish at 62.8 percent for the game. That figure easily topped the school record of 57.4 percent they shot against CUC on Jan. 4 of last season.

Turnovers plagued both teams, as MSOE had 24 and the Cougars 22, but the Red & White defense limited the normally high-scoring Cougars to 37.5 percent shooting in the half.

Junior Megan Kroll led the defensive charge with four steals, while Denfeld had three and two blocks.

MSOE returns to the court at home, hosting Marian Tuesday.
