Women's Basketball Goes Down Swinging at CUW

Box Score

MEQUON, Wisconsin – Junior Jamie Spanbauer scored 14 points and junior Samantha Brooker grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the MSOE women's basketball in a 53-40 loss at Concordia Wisconsin Tuesday night.

The Raiders (5-11, 3-8 NACC) allowed the Falcons (12-4, 9-2 NACC) to pull away with a sizable dry spell leading into halftime but kept fighting in the second half and won the fourth quarter 17-12 before falling.

Spanbauer scored seven points in each half and Brooker added six points to go with her fourth double-digit rebounding game of the season. Senior Shaylan Reardon chipped in 12 points, all in the second half, for the Red & White.

Audrey Scharmer scored 19 points and Brianna Wagner finished with 10 for CUW.

Spanbauer hit a three-pointer in the dying seconds of the first quarter to pull MSOE within 16-12 during a fairly tight opening period. Unfortunately, the Raiders would be shut out in the second half, allowing Concordia to open a 26-12 lead at halftime. Sophomore Kayla Barreto snapped the scoreless drought at 11:42 with a jumper 1:33 into the second half. The cold snap included 11-straight missed shots and eight turnovers.

The Red & White came out in the second half and got back into the rhythm of the game. After facing a game-high 24-point deficit at 38-14 at the midway point of the third quarter, MSOE went on an extended 26-14 run, starting with a Reardon basket with 2:55 remaining in the third period and a three-pointer by junior Kiana Jeremiah making it 52-40 with 1:27 to play in regulation.

The Raiders finished the night shooting 32.7 percent from the field, hitting on just 3-of-17 three-point attempts, and made all five free throw attempts. They did grab a 33-32 rebounding advantage and 24-18 edge on points in the paint. CUW shot 40.4 percent on the night with a 4-for-14 clip from beyond the arc.

MSOE returns to the floor Saturday, hosting Aurora at 5 p.m.
