Box Score 2 SCHAUMBERG, Ill. – Junior Jake Roberts drove in three runs in game two to lead the MSOE baseball team to a doubleheader split against Dominican Saturday at Boomers Stadium.
The Raiders (5-8, 1-1 NACC) opened conference play with their first games since March 15 due to inclement weather and field conditions. They lost a late lead in game one, a 5-4 loss to the Stars (11-8, 3-3 NACC), but bounced back for a 6-3 win in game two.
Roberts had a pair of run-scoring singles to keep MSOE in the lead for the entirety of the second game, after a late lead slipped away in game one. His RBI single put his team ahead with a single run in the first.
After Dominican tied the game in the fourth inning, the Raiders got on the board again with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. An error and single put a pair of runners on for senior Derek Jordan, who singled in a run. After back-to-back outs, freshman Brad Schonder plated another run with a single of his own.
The Stars pulled another run back to make it 3-2, but the Red and White put the game out of reach with a three-spot in the seventh. A sacrifice fly scored the first run of the frame, then Roberts drove in two more with a single to right field.
The home team would pull within 6-3 with another single run in the eighth inning, but would get no closer. Senior Adam Vlaj (1-1) threw eight strong innings for the Raiders, scattering seven hits and striking out six. Senior David Miklosi threw a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season.
In game one, Dominican capitalized on a two-out rally in the ninth inning to come up with a come-from-behind win. Trailing by three runs at 3-0 and 4-1, the Stars tied the game by the final inning and started a rally with two outs. Joe Krasney singled, then stole second. He would come around to score on a single to left field when there was an error on the play at the plate.
MSOE jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Tyler Magyar drove in the first run with a single to right field. His brother, sophomore Casey Magyar, followed suit with a two-run single to center.
Dominican slowly pulled back into the game with a run in the third inning. After the Raiders re-established a three-run lead at 4-1 in the fifth inning, the Stars scored twice in the sixth. A lead-off double came around to score on Joe Lyons' single. He then came around to score two batters later on an RBI single from Lucas McKinney.
McKinney drove in another run for DU with a sac fly to tie the game at 4-4 and set up a dramatic final inning for the hosts.
Errors dogged the Raiders in both games, as they committed four in each game. The miscues proved to be the difference as Luke Yogerst threw eight strong innings on the mount. He scatted eight hits and three walks, allowing just two earned runs. Junior Josh Kundinger (1-1) got the loss in relief. He allowed four hits in 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs, but just one was earned.
MSOE returns to action Sunday, playing a doubleheader at Benedictine. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Milwaukee, but shifted locations as a part of a flurry of schedule changes this season. The Raiders will be the home team.
