MSOE Pitching Downs Aurora In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE baseball got a pair of strong pitching performances from junior Ben Falls and senior Adam Vlaj in picking up a doubleheader sweep of Aurora, 8-3 and 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.

The Raiders (8-8, 5-3 NACC) defeated the Spartans (7-16, 3-5 NACC) for their first time in the NACC era in game one, coming off their first-ever defeat of Benedictine on Sunday.

Falls (1-2) went the distance, striking out four in nine innings of work in game one. He scattered five hits and walked just one. The offense supported the lefty with 12 hits, scoring four times in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and adding another insurance run in the eighth in support.

After AU knotted the score in the sixth, the Raiders sent all nine batters to the plate. They had two runners on with two outs in the frame before the next four hitters reached base. Seniors Max Poeske and David Miklosi had RBI singles and senior Tyler Magyar punctuated the inning with a two-run single.

Aurora jumped on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the first inning, but Falls settled down and allowed just one hitter to reach base safely over his next four innings.

Meanwhile, the Raiders took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and then added to their lead in the fifth inning. Magyar led off with a double and came around to score and make it 3-1 when junior Jake Roberts' singled through the left side.

Aurora came back to tie the score in the next half inning, putting runners on second and third with just one out. An RBI single plated the first run, while the second scored on a fielder's choice MSOE just could not turn into a double play.

Senior Derek Jordan collected three hits in the game, while Miklosi, Magyar and Vlaj each had two hits.

In game two, Vlaj (2-1) also turned in a strong complete-game effort. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter, while working around nine hits.

Roberts drove in the game-winning run with a one-out single in the eighth inning. Magyar walked to lead off the inning, then Jordan singled two batters later. Roberts followed up with a liner to right field, scoring Magyar.

Vlaj then finished strong, working around a lead-off walk in the ninth inning by striking out the next two batters looking.

The Spartans once again struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. That 2-0 lead held until the third inning. The Raiders got one back in the second inning and in the third inning, senior Wes Stasik scored on a ground out. Jordan then followed with an RBI single up the middle.

Aurora knotted the score at 3-3 with a single run in the sixth inning.

MSOE returns to action at Thursday, playing at Edgewood.
